Most modern authors just make up a stone that they “feel” suits the astrological sign, however there were a few ways in which a stone was traditionally chosen for a particular sign.
The first was based on the signs ruling planet. Various stones, like herbs, were categorized under certain planets depending on physical characteristics, for instance red stones were often relegated to mars, Aries ruling planet. Birthstones and zodiac stones are two completely different things; birthstones pertain only to a given month, whereas astrological stones are intended to be worn by those born under a given sign. Zodiac signs usually go from the middle of one month to the middle of the next in the Gregorian calendar, according to western astrology.
